Battery No. 4 near Yorktown was a siege position where Union troops set up heavy mortars, and the caption notes ten 13-inch mortars, each weighing 20,000 pounds, mounted at its south end. The picture dates to May 1862, when George B. McClellan's army was pressing the Confederate defenses at Yorktown during the Peninsula Campaign. The Confederates abandoned the town in early May, so the negative captures the Union siege works just before that withdrawal. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, made the wet collodion glass stereograph negative, and the view shows the sheer scale of the artillery brought up for the siege.
