A two-gun battery dug into earthworks south of Yorktown, Virginia, sits at the center of this stereograph pair, with sandbag revetments and a 32-pounder beside a 24-pounder siege piece. The record calls the work Confederate, but the title describes Federal soldiers occupying it, which fits the town's changing hands during the Peninsula Campaign. Confederates had fortified Yorktown in 1861 and held it until early May 1862, when they withdrew before Union forces under George B. McClellan. The firm of E. & H.T. Anthony issued the pair as stereographs, meant to be viewed together through a hand viewer for a three-dimensional effect.
