Few spots on the James River were more heavily contested than the bend at Dutch Gap, where Union forces under Benjamin Butler began cutting a canal in 1864 to bypass Confederate guns. This view shows a Confederate battery above the cut, which the record calls Battery Dantzler, though the caption spells the name in more than one way. The negative is a wet collodion glass stereograph dated 1865, and it was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, a photographer whose wartime work is often confused with others'. It is useful for showing the fortified shoreline that made the digging necessary.
