Dug across the neck of a sharp bend in the James River near Richmond, the Dutch Gap canal was meant to let Union ships bypass Confederate guns at Drewry's Bluff. This stereograph pair, made in November 1864 as the cut was being excavated, shows the raw trench while work was still underway. Because the two glass plates were recorded as left and right halves, the scene can be viewed in three dimensions. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though the attribution has since been revised.
