Few photographs from the Civil War show a British peer among Union officers, and this stereograph records one such visit. The negative's sleeve dates the scene to April 1863, when Lord Abinger was photographed with a group of officers at Army of the Potomac headquarters in Falmouth, Virginia. The camp sat on the north bank of the Rappahannock, opposite Fredericksburg, where the army was preparing for the spring campaign that ended in the Battle of Chancellorsville. The glass negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now considered uncertain.
