Taken at Petersburg, Virginia, in November 1864, this wet collodion glass negative shows a group of engineers and draftsmen at the headquarters of the Army of the Potomac. By then the city had been under siege for several months, and the army's engineers were busy surveying lines, drawing maps, and planning the trenches and earthworks that stretched around it. The men pictured turned field observations into the working maps that commanders relied on during the stalemate. The photographer was David B. Woodbury, who worked with the army during the war and died in 1866.
