Here a group of men from the Provost Guard, the military police unit attached to headquarters of the Army of the Potomac, stands posed at Petersburg, Virginia, in February 1865. The city had been under siege by Union forces since the summer of 1864, and the provost guard's job was to keep order among soldiers, civilians and prisoners behind the lines. The picture was made by David B. Woodbury, a photographer who documented the war, and it survives as a wet collodion glass negative. Images like this one show the everyday organization of a wartime camp rather than the battlefield, which makes them useful to historians.
