Few images from the Army of the Potomac capture the men who policed its own ranks as directly as this one. The provost guards were the Union army's military police, tasked with keeping order among soldiers, handling stragglers and deserters, and guarding headquarters areas, so a posed group at army headquarters shows the disciplinary side of camp life in 1864. The photograph is one of the Civil War views made by Mathew B. Brady and his team, whose wartime work for the Union army documented the men, camps and commanders of the eastern theater for public and official use.
