Winter quarters at Brandy Station, Virginia, show the headquarters of the Army of the Potomac in February 1864, when the army had settled into camp after the fall campaigns. The station had been the scene of one of the largest cavalry battles of the war in June 1863, and the rail line running through the area made it a useful base for the army. The glass negative was made with the wet collodion process, which required photographers to coat and expose plates before they dried, so such views took considerable effort. The record notes that the picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a well-known Civil War photographer, though that attribution is no longer assumed.
