Brandy Station, in Culpeper County, Virginia, is the location named for this view of the 5th Army Corps headquarters in February 1864. The area had been the scene of a large cavalry battle in June 1863, and by winter the Army of the Potomac was encamped there, so the scene reflects a lull between campaigns rather than active fighting. The image was made from a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to coat and expose plates quickly in the field. It was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution has since been revised.
