Few places in Virginia saw more cavalry activity than the rail junction at Brandy Station, and this glass negative records the headquarters of the 1st Brigade Horse Artillery nearby in February 1864. The camp lay in Culpeper County, where the Army of the Potomac wintered after the fighting of 1863, including the June battle there, the largest cavalry engagement of the war in North America. The plate is a wet collodion negative, a process that required photographers to coat and expose the glass while it was still wet. An older attribution credited Alexander Gardner, the Scottish-born photographer, though that link is no longer assumed.
