A sutler's tent serving the First Brigade Horse Artillery at Brandy Station, Virginia, was captured on this plate in February 1864. Sutlers were civilian traders who sold food, tobacco, paper and other goods to soldiers, and their tents were a familiar sight wherever units wintered. Brandy Station had seen a major cavalry battle in June 1863, and by early 1864 it was a Union camp. The negative is a wet collodion glass plate, the process that dominated Civil War photography, and the record notes an older attribution to Alexander Gardner.
