Brandy Station, in Culpeper County, Virginia, was the site of the largest cavalry battle fought in North America, in June 1863. This 1864 photograph shows Capt. James M. Robertson with the staff of the 1st Brigade Horse Artillery, mounted gun units that moved quickly with the cavalry. The image is a glass negative made by the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose and develop each plate before it dried, so the sitting had to be planned carefully. Photographer James F. Gibson made the picture, and it is one of many group portraits of officers that field photographers produced during the war.
