Culpeper, Virginia, is the place that sets this picture apart from the many Civil War portraits on the board, and the September 1863 date places it in the weeks after the armies had moved through the region following Gettysburg. Mathew B. Brady, whose studio gave the nation some of its best-known images of the war, is credited as photographer, and the sitters are officers of a horse artillery brigade attached to the Army of the Potomac. Horse artillery units were valued for their mobility, keeping pace with cavalry and moving their guns quickly to where a battle was turning, so the group portrait records a branch of the army prized for speed. Its catalog number, 76, places it within a larger series of Brady's Civil War photographs.
