This photograph shows Battery A, 4th U.S. Artillery, posed at Culpeper, Virginia, a crossroads town in the Piedmont that changed hands and filled with troops several times during the war. The record ties the battery to Robertson's Brigade and dates the image to 1863, a year when Union and Confederate armies repeatedly moved through this region. The picture was made from a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to coat and expose plates quickly, so field images of this kind are valued as early records of how artillery units looked on campaign. The photographer is listed as James F. Gibson, born 1828.
