Officers of a Union horse artillery brigade posed near Culpeper, Virginia, in September 1863, a detail that places this portrait in the crowded winter-to-autumn campaigning of the Army of the Potomac. Mathew Brady, the best-known photographer of the war, is credited as the maker, and his studio's field teams often recorded officers and units in camp, which gave the Army's commanders and families a visual record of who served. The picture is catalogued as part of the Civil War Photograph Collection at the Library of Congress, where it is numbered 607.
