Officers of the U.S. Horse Artillery Brigade, Army of the Potomac, posed at Culpeper, Virginia, in September 1863, and the caption on the negative sleeve gives that place and date. Culpeper was a staging area for the Army of the Potomac in the months after Gettysburg, and horse artillery batteries, which kept their guns mobile enough to travel with cavalry, were a distinctive part of that force. The negative is a wet collodion glass plate, a process that required photographers to prepare and expose each plate on the spot. The image was once credited to Alexander Gardner, but that attribution is now considered uncertain.
