Taken near Culpeper, Virginia, in September 1863, this view shows officers of a United States horse artillery brigade, mounted gunners who could keep pace with cavalry. The army had camped around Culpeper through the summer after the fighting at Brandy Station and Gettysburg. Mathew Brady, who had built his name on portraits of famous Americans before the war, later sent field teams to document the Army of the Potomac. Note the mix of dress coats and field gear, a sign of how quickly the war stripped away its early pageantry.
