This glass negative records a group of officers gathered at the headquarters of the Army of the Potomac in front of Petersburg, Virginia, in August 1864. By then the Union army was locked in the siege of Petersburg, a rail and supply hub south of Richmond, and the lines had settled into a grinding stalemate. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, worked in the field with the wet collodion process, which required coating and exposing glass plates before the emulsion dried. Such images gave the public a rare look at the men directing the campaign, away from the battlefield itself.
