Taken at army headquarters near Petersburg, Virginia, in August 1864, this view shows a military telegraph operator at work during the siege that followed the Union army's arrival there that June. Wire communication was vital to commanders coordinating troops across miles of trenches, and telegraph lines tied headquarters to Washington and to units in the field. The glass negative was made with the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated, exposed, and developed before it dried. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, worked in Petersburg during the war and died in 1866.
