Taken at Brandy Station, Virginia, in April 1864, this view shows the headquarters of the Army of the Potomac and the quarters of Gen. Rufus Ingalls, the army's chief quartermaster. The station had been the site of the largest cavalry battle of the war the previous June, and by spring the army was gathering in the area before Ulysses S. Grant launched the Overland Campaign in May. The image survives as a wet collodion glass negative, and its record notes that it was once credited to photographer Alexander Gardner.
