Few places in Virginia saw more Union military activity in 1864 than Brandy Station, the rail-served ground that had hosted the large cavalry battle of June 1863 and later became a supply and staging area for the Army of the Potomac. Here the subject is Gen. Rufus Ingalls, the army's chief quartermaster, shown on horseback, a reminder that the men who kept troops fed, equipped and moving rarely appear in battle pictures. The glass negative was made with the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated, exposed and developed while still wet, so field photographers like James F. Gibson had to carry a portable darkroom wherever they went.
