Four officers of the 3d Army Corps' provost marshal staff stand for this portrait taken at Brandy Station, Virginia, in 1863. Provost marshals ran military police duties behind the lines, handling prisoners, deserters, stragglers and order in camps, so their presence says much about the daily discipline of a large army. The wet collodion glass negative was made by Mathew Brady, whose studio and field teams documented the war extensively. Brandy Station, a crossroads and rail stop in Culpeper County, saw major cavalry fighting in June 1863, and the photograph captures the everyday world of the army around it.
