Taken in Culpeper, Virginia, in March 1864, this view shows Union provost marshals attached to the Third Army Corps, the men charged with policing the army's camps, prisoners and rear areas. Mathew Brady's studio produced the image, one of many he and his assistants made of Union officers and staff during the war, and it was catalogued in the Library of Congress under the Civil War photograph collection. Culpeper served as a major Union staging ground in the winter and spring of 1864, just before the Overland Campaign began, which gives the portrait its wartime context. The record is brief, so the names of the individual officers are not recorded here.
