A group of mechanics from the 1st Division of the 9th Army Corps, photographed at Petersburg, Virginia, in October 1864, shows the men who kept the army's equipment in working order rather than the soldiers in its lines. Petersburg had been under siege since June, and the 9th Corps held part of that front, so skilled repair work was essential to keeping operations going through the autumn. The image is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the photographer to coat and expose each plate on the spot. It was made by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866.
