A lieutenant named Vane poses beside his horse at the headquarters of the Army of the Potomac, placed by the negative sleeve at Petersburg, Virginia, in December 1864. That was deep in the siege of Petersburg, which began in June 1864 when Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant moved to cut the rail lines feeding Richmond. The glass negative was made by the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop each plate within minutes. David B. Woodbury, the photographer, was one of several who recorded officers and camp life during the campaign.
