Brandy Station, Virginia, was the site of the Army of the Potomac's headquarters camp in the spring of 1864, and this stereograph records its eastern half in April of that year. The image is a stereo pair, made from two glass plates that were exposed side by side so that viewers could see depth when the pair was placed in a stereoscope. The photographer was James F. Gibson, who worked with Alexander Gardner's studio in the field, and his work from this period documents the daily organization of a large army encamped between campaigns. Wet collodion glass negatives like these were fragile and required photographers to prepare and develop plates on the spot.
