Lt. Col. Orson H. Hart, serving as assistant adjutant general of the Third Corps, poses with his horse at Brandy Station, Virginia, in this 1864 view. Staff officers like Hart handled orders and correspondence, so the picture shows a working officer rather than a battlefield scene. Brandy Station was the site of a large cavalry battle in June 1863, and by 1864 the area was still tied to Union army operations in northern Virginia. The photograph was made on a glass negative using the wet collodion process, which required plates to be coated, exposed, and developed while still wet. The image was credited to Mathew B. Brady, whose studio documented the war for the public.
