A sutler's tent stands at the headquarters of the 1st Brigade, Horse Artillery, at Brandy Station, Virginia, a place already known for the large cavalry battle fought there in June 1863. Sutlers were civilian merchants licensed to follow army camps and sell goods the government ration did not supply, such as tobacco, writing paper and food, so their tents were a familiar stop for soldiers off duty. James F. Gibson made the 1864 negative on a glass plate using the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated and exposed before it dried.
