Few pictures from the war show officers at leisure, and this stereograph records a dinner party held outside a tent at Army of the Potomac headquarters near Brandy Station, Virginia, in 1864. The camp was a cavalry center where the army regrouped after the fighting of 1863, so the scene reflects the routine of a large headquarters rather than the battlefield. Made as a glass negative using the wet collodion process, the image was issued as a stereograph, a paired photograph viewed through a stereoscope to create a three-dimensional effect. Its survival in the Library of Congress collection makes it a useful record of how officers lived between campaigns.
