Culpeper, Virginia, served as a major staging ground for the Army of the Potomac in 1863, and this view records members of Battery M, 2nd U.S. Artillery, a regular army unit whose men were known by the nickname "Bensons." The photograph was made by James F. Gibson, a photographer who worked for the Gardner studio and spent much of the war documenting Union camps and soldiers. Its wet collodion glass negative reflects the exacting process of the period, when a plate had to be coated, exposed and developed before it dried. Images like this give a direct look at the artillerymen, their gear and the daily routine of camp life in northern Virginia.
