Photographed near Fair Oaks, Virginia, in 1862, this view shows Battery M of the 2nd U.S. Artillery under Capt. Henry Benson. It is a glass stereograph, one of a matched pair meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The wet collodion process required the photographer to coat, expose and develop each glass plate on site before it dried, which kept cameras close to the army they recorded. The battle of Fair Oaks, fought May 31 and June 1, 1862, was part of the Peninsula Campaign, George McClellan's effort to reach Richmond, so the battery's position here reflects that larger push toward the Confederate capital.
