Taken near Fair Oaks, Virginia, this stereograph shows a Federal artillery battery during the Peninsula Campaign of 1862, when Union forces under George B. McClellan advanced up the peninsula toward Richmond. The fighting at nearby Fair Oaks (also called Seven Pines) in late May and early June 1862 was one of the campaign's bloodiest engagements. The picture was made by photographer James F. Gibson on a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the photographer to coat and expose each plate before it dried. Its two plates were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, which gives the guns and men a sense of depth.
