This stereograph shows the artillery of Horatio G. Gibson's C and G batteries, pictured near Fair Oaks in eastern Virginia. The photograph dates to 1862, when the Union Army of the Potomac was advancing up the peninsula toward Richmond during the Peninsula Campaign. Fair Oaks, also called Seven Pines, was the scene of heavy fighting at the end of May and beginning of June that year. Wet collodion glass negatives like this one required photographers to prepare and expose plates on the spot, so views of camps and equipment from this period are a useful record of how the army was organized and supplied in the field. The stereo format, meant to be viewed through a special viewer, gave the image a sense of depth.
