Set in the vicinity of Brandy Station, Virginia, this 1864 view shows a camp of the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry, part of the 3rd Division. The town had already drawn national attention in June 1863, when it was the site of the largest cavalry battle fought in North America. By 1864 the surrounding countryside was occupied by Union horsemen who maintained semi-permanent camps between operations. The image was made from a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to coat and expose each plate before it dried. Published by E. & H.T. Anthony, a New York firm that sold Civil War views to a broad public, it offers a rare look at the everyday routine of a cavalry unit.
