Brandy Station, in Culpeper County, Virginia, is the setting for this 1864 view of the troopers of Company D, 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry. The village had been the site of the largest cavalry battle fought in North America, on June 9, 1863, and Union horsemen were still camped and drilling across that ground the following year. The picture is a glass negative made by the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated, exposed, and developed before it dried. Exposures were slow, so the men had to hold still for the camera, and the result gives a steady record of how a cavalry company looked during the war.
