Company K of the 1st U.S. Cavalry, part of the 1st Division Cavalry, is the unit named in this 1864 view taken at Brandy Station, Virginia. The site was already well known, since the battle fought there on June 9, 1863, is generally regarded as the largest cavalry engagement in North America. The wet collodion glass negative behind this picture reflects the photographic methods of the period, and the New York firm E. & H.T. Anthony published it. The record does not name the individual soldiers, so the men remain anonymous.
