Pitched near Brandy Station in Virginia, this camp belonged to the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry, a Union regiment in the Army of the Potomac in 1864. The area had been the scene of the largest cavalry battle fought in North America, in June 1863, and by the following year Union mounted units were camped and drilling across the surrounding countryside. The picture survives as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required quick exposure and careful handling in the field. Catalogers once credited Alexander Gardner with the image, though that attribution is now uncertain.
