A military band from the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry, a regiment that wore Zouave-style dress, appears here at Brandy Station, Virginia, in 1864. The area had seen heavy fighting, including the large cavalry battle there in June 1863, and by 1864 Union troops were camped and drilling nearby. Bands like this one played for parades, drills, and funerals, so their presence in a camp photograph shows how central music was to daily army life. The picture is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required exposing and developing the plate while the coating was still wet.
