Company G of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry was one of the Zouave-style companies in the regiment, which Charles Collis raised in 1861 and 1862 and which wore the baggy trousers and short jackets associated with French colonial troops. Here the company is photographed at Petersburg, Virginia, during the siege that began in June 1864 and lasted until the city fell in April 1865. The wet collodion glass negative used for this image was the standard method of the period, requiring a photographer to coat, expose, and develop the plate quickly, so the sharp detail in the faces and uniforms is worth noticing.
