Company H of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry stands for the camera in front of Petersburg, Virginia, in August 1864, a few months into the Union siege of the city. By then the fighting around Petersburg had settled into a grinding war of trenches and earthworks, and portraits like this one show ordinary soldiers in the middle of that long standoff. The picture was made from a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the photographer to coat and expose each plate almost immediately, often in a field darkroom near the lines. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866, and his negatives are among the Civil War glass plates held by the Library of Congress.
