Umbrella Rock, a broad sandstone outcrop on the crest of Lookout Mountain, is the feature this stereograph singles out, shown here in a view taken near Chattanooga in 1864. The rock got its name from its overhanging shape, which sheltered visitors from sun and rain and made it a favorite stop for tourists long before the war. Lookout Mountain rose above the Tennessee River and the city, and it was the scene of fighting during the Battle of Chattanooga in late 1863, when Union forces fought their way up its slopes. The image was issued by E. & H.T. Anthony, a New York firm that sold stereo cards to a wide public, so it offers a glimpse of a landmark that became known to Americans through war coverage and souvenir photographs alike.
