A stereograph pair, this view looks down the Tennessee River from the heights of Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, and the two glass plates let the scene appear three-dimensional when viewed through a stereoscope. The ground it shows was fought over in late 1863, when Union forces took Lookout Mountain in the battle often called "the Battle Above the Clouds," which opened the road to Chattanooga. The river was central to Union supply efforts in the region, and by 1864 the landscape would have been a reminder of that campaign. The collection credits the photographer as Alexander Gardner, though the attribution was previously assigned to him and may not be certain.
