A blockhouse standing beside the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad is the particular subject here, a squat timber fort built to guard the line and its bridges and trestles. The caption on the negative sleeve says the blockhouses were garrisoned against Wheeler's Cavalry, the Confederate raiders under Joseph Wheeler who repeatedly struck Union supply lines in Tennessee during 1864. Railroads like this one were the lifeblood of Union forces around Chattanooga, so small guard posts such as this were a common sight along the route. The picture survives as a stereograph pair on two glass plates, a format that let viewers see the scene in depth through a stereoscope.
