A pair of glass plates makes this view of a fortified bridge over the Cumberland River at Nashville a stereograph, two slightly offset exposures meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. Union forces had held Nashville since early 1862, and by 1864 the city's river crossings were guarded because its rail and supply lines were vital to the Union war effort. The caption identifies the scene as a guarded bridge, and the photographer is attributed to David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866. The wet collodion glass negative shows the exacting process of the Civil War era.
