Cumberland Landing, a wharf on the Pamunkey River in eastern Virginia, served as a major supply base for the Army of the Potomac during its 1862 advance up the peninsula. This view shows a federal encampment there, recorded as a stereograph pair: two glass negatives, one for each eye, which produced a sense of depth when viewed through a stereoscope. The wet collodion process required photographers to coat and expose each plate before it dried, so field work like this took considerable preparation. The picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a leading Civil War photographer, though that attribution is no longer considered certain.
