Cumberland Landing, on the Pamunkey River in Virginia, served as a supply base for the Army of the Potomac during George McClellan's Peninsula Campaign in 1862, and this view shows the army's encampment there. It survives as a stereograph, a pair of glass negatives that, viewed through a stereoscope, produced a three-dimensional effect that was popular with home audiences at the time. The picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a well-known Civil War photographer, but that attribution has since been set aside.
