Cumberland Landing sat on the Pamunkey River in Virginia, and in 1862 it served as a supply base for the Army of the Potomac during George McClellan's Peninsula Campaign. This stereograph glass negative shows the army's encampment there, with tents and men arranged on the riverbank, a view of the vast logistical effort that moved troops and stores up the peninsula toward Richmond. The negative is part of the Library of Congress Civil War glass negative collection, and it is one of the images once attributed to Alexander Gardner, the photographer whose work from the period is widely studied.
