Cumberland Landing, on the Pamunkey River in Virginia, was the Union supply base that Alexander Gardner photographed in 1862 during the Peninsula Campaign, when Gen. George B. McClellan moved his army up the peninsula toward Richmond. This stereograph shows the Federal encampment from a second vantage point, its paired glass plates capturing the tents and activity of a camp that stood at the head of a waterway used to land men, horses and stores. Gardner, who had been working for the Union's photographic effort under Mathew Brady, produced views like this one so that viewers could see the scale of the army's logistics, a side of the war rarely recorded.
