Cumberland Landing, on the Pamunky River in Virginia, served as a major supply depot for the Union Army of the Potomac during the Peninsula Campaign of 1862, when General George McClellan moved his forces up the peninsula toward Richmond. This panoramic view, assembled from multiple photographic sections, shows the sprawling tent encampment that grew up along the river as men and materiel were unloaded from transports. The print was made from photographs attributed to the studio of Alexander Gardner, whose team documented the Army of the Potomac throughout the war. Such panoramas let viewers take in the scale of a wartime logistics hub that few soldiers ever saw from above.
